How to Transfer Large Files from Your PC to a Pen Drive
Transferring files from your PC to a pen drive is generally a straightforward task. However, if you're trying to transfer large files, especially those over 4GB in size, you may run into issues. This guide will walk you through the steps to successfully transfer large files from your PC to a pen drive.
Step 1: Check the File System of Your Pen Drive
Before transferring large files, it’s important to know the file system format of your pen drive, as certain formats have file size limitations.
FAT32: Supports files up to 4GB. If your pen drive is formatted as FAT32, you won’t be able to transfer files larger than 4GB.
NTFS and exFAT: Both formats support larger file sizes and are ideal for transferring large files.
To check the file system:
1. Insert the pen drive into your PC.
2. Open File Explorer.
3. Right-click on the pen drive and select Properties.
4. Look for the File System information.
Step 2: Reformat the Pen Drive (if necessary)
If your pen drive is formatted as FAT32, you’ll need to reformat it to NTFS or exFAT to transfer large files. Note: Formatting will erase all data on the drive, so make sure to back up any important files first.
To reformat the pen drive:
1. Right-click on the pen drive in File Explorer and select Format.
2. Choose either NTFS or exFAT from the file system dropdown menu.
3. Ensure the Quick Format box is checked (this makes the process faster).
4. Click Start to begin the formatting process.
Once formatting is complete, your pen drive will be able to handle large files.
Step 3: Transfer the Files
Now that your pen drive is properly formatted, you can transfer the large files. Follow these steps:
1. Open the folder on your PC containing the files you want to transfer.
2. Select the file(s), then either right-click and select Copy (or Cut if you want to move the files) or press Ctrl + C (for copy) or Ctrl + X (for cut).
3. Open the pen drive folder in File Explorer.
4. Right-click inside the folder and select Paste or press Ctrl + V.
The files will begin transferring to your pen drive. The time it takes depends on the file size and your pen drive's speed.
Step 4: Safely Eject the Pen Drive
Once the file transfer is complete, it’s important to safely eject the pen drive to avoid data corruption.
1. Click the Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon in the taskbar.
2. Select your pen drive from the list and wait for a notification that it is safe to remove the device.
3. Remove the pen drive from your PC.
Bonus Tip: Compress or Split Files if Necessary
If you’re still running into issues transferring large files, you can try compressing them or splitting them into smaller parts using tools like 7-Zip or WinRAR.
To compress a file, right-click on it, select Send to and then Compressed (zipped) folder.
To split a large file into smaller parts using 7-Zip:
1. Right-click the file and choose 7-Zip → Add to archive.
2. In the Split to volumes, bytes field, enter the desired size for each part (e.g., 4GB).
3. Click OK to create the split files.
After splitting the files, you can transfer the parts individually to your pen drive and reassemble them on another PC.
